Meet Miss Science

Miss Science (Sherri Smith-Dodgson) has over 17 years experience in elementary science education. In 2000 Sherri completed her MA in Organizational Managements, and developed a skill to cross boundaries from public education into the private sector.

In 2009, Sherri Smith Dodgson found a need for a quality, science enrichment program in the greater Phoenix area. She developed Discover Science 4 Kids, offering a 4 week summer camp to students entering 2nd through 6th grades. After receiving feedback from parents stating that they wanted more, Sherri raised capital through a grant to create a pilot science program for one of Scottsdale Unified School District’s K-8 schools.

The 2010 DS4K summer camp created an extension from the year before, to include STEM concepts and the integration of robotics using the LEGO Mindstorms, music and art. During the final week of camp, DS4K held an Open House for local families and business leaders. The Open House was attended by Congressman Harry Mitchell, along with leaders from the Science Foundation of Arizona and SAP and Solar Man from APS.

Most recently, DS4K has partnered with Biz in a Boxx and the Microsoft Store to offer a series of community outreach workshops. Together, Sherri and Melissa Rose (BIAB) have created a curriculum to put an extra “E” in STEM for Entrepreneurship!

In the Media:

To further promote quality science education, Sherri has appeared on NBC Channel 12, Arizona Midday as a contributor. During her segments, Sherri teaches basic science concepts as a tool to encourage parents help develop their child’s love for science.

Sherri Smith-Dodgson has spent the majority of her career as a classroom educator working in grades Pre-K through 6th. During that time, Sherri worked as a lead science teacher helping to develop and implement a new science curriculum for Gilbert Public Schools.
